Last week I channeled my inner teen and headed for the mall. As a side note, I mentally capitalize The Mall as there is but one in this city. Upon entering, I was immediately and pleasantly assaulted by the scent of Cinnzeo, which seems to be the modern answer to Cinnabon. It’s nice that, although physical stores are in decline, some things are still the same.

There were two specific reasons I was mall-shopping, and the first was that I was picking up my free bag of truffles from the new Lindt store. I had signed up for their special rewards program specifically to get free chocolates during my birthday month. They didn’t have strawberry or mint, but I did try a new fudge swirl. The lack of strawberry has been a low-key grievance in my house. I am never mad at either of my sons, but a year or so ago my younger son ate the last dark chocolate strawberry truffle that I had been saving, post-Galentines Day 2025, and I have never let him forget it. That flavour is hard to find and indeed, I have not seen it since early 2025. Remember when you ate the last dark chocolate strawberry and I never found it again? I’ll ask him, to which he responds that I never actually told him I was saving it and also it was in the basket with all the other Lindt truffles that were NOT being saved for a future, special occasion, known only to me.

Is it too much to ask that he reads my mind?

The second reason I was going to the mall was to buy a birthday gift for my mother. I had brought her a gift from Cambodia but I wanted to supplement that with her favourite vanilla-scented body lotion from Bath and Body Works. While I was there, I thought I would purchase a few lotions for myself. I don’t wear perfume, but I do like to choose a different scented body lotion based on my mood and that day’s activities.

I was approached with an offer of help by one of the salespeople, an extremely friendly and jolly woman around my age, with a haircut that can only be described as “fun.” I didn’t really need help, but I do like chatting with salespeople, particularly at a place like Bath and Body Works, where there is no commission. And although I have my favourite scents, I always like sniffing new ones. Every favourite scent was once a stranger, as no one says.

But it was so odd. Every time I reached for one of my favourites, the woman shook her head gravely. No, she’d say. You don’t want THAT one. Then she would steer me over to something very rose-forward and floral, and insist that it was perfect for me. I would nod, politely, and then go back and grab the my favourites, the scents that she insisted were Too Much. Oh, she would say, her lavender spikes bobbing slightly, her eyebrows raised. You…LIKE that? Hmm. And then she would start to steer me towards the vile-smelling peach lotions.

It’s not like I require agreement from customer service personnel on my personal scent choices, or that I fear their judgement, but it was awkward.

I wonder what her feeling was when she left work that day. I wonder if she went home and bemoaned the difficulty of working with customers who just would not listen to her. I wonder if I seemed like the exact right person for Peach Blossom or Rose Garden, and it was disappointing that I refused to be the person she wanted me to be.

Weekly Reading

This Is Not About Us. An ill-timed, crowd-pleasing apple cake brought to a septuagenarian’s funeral spurs a years-long feud between the sisters of the deceased, and that’s how this absolute delight of a book begins. I laughed so much throughout this gem; I could totally see similar things happening in my own family. What can I say, if you have a large extended family, there is never a shortage of drama! The book unfolds in vignettes, each one focusing on different branches of the family. If you are looking for a thick plot, this is not for you, but if you are looking for a wonderful slice of a family’s life with compelling and relatable characters, look no further! I loved every sentence! Interestingly, the author wrote the incredible Isola – which I also loved – but the two books could not be more different.

Say You’ll Remember Me. This was a perfect book for a road trip: easy to read, not complicated, happy ending. What more do you need? Two people fall madly in love but live far apart – can a long distance romance work? She is caring for a mother with dementia, he has a brand new veterinary practice and tons of debt. Can they make it work? Spoiler alert: of course they can. I liked how this book portrayed financial realities and also the difficulty of being a caregiver (note: mother with dementia is three years older than I am, lord have mercy). Please note the page about returning shopping carts.

Our road trip was a lot of fun. My mom enjoyed her gifts, including the apparently divisive vanilla scented lotions. Vanilla? You want vaNILLA? the fun-haired woman said to me, like I was stating a preference for BO mixed with skunk. We had a good time all around, plus, the snowstorms, cold weather, and gale-force winds took a break, and we had lovely warm temperatures. There was a lot of snow in the mountain passes, but the roads were clear and the driving was smooth.

It looks like a perfect week for gardening, we have lots of sunshine ahead of us. May the Fourth be with you, friends! xo

  1. Cracking up at this: “Every favourite scent was once a stranger, as no one says.”

What a peculiar experience with the salesperson! She clearly had HER favorites and saw in you a kindred spirit.

Also, in what universe is VANILLA offensive?! Of all the scents, that has to be one of the most universally innocuous, right??? Although I spent decades drenched in Warm Vanilla Sugar so perhaps I am a titch biased.

Nicole, speaking of scents, my beloved husband has been on a perfume kick for about a year and a half now, and he LOVES trying new scents, and I love that he has found an interest that he enjoys, and also SO MANY PERFUMES ARE GAGOUS. At this point, when he has found some truly wonderful scents that we all enjoy, WHY won’t he stop trying out things that smell like burning rubber mixed with bourbon smoke????

    • Suzanne, I love vanilla too – when I was in high school I wore Vanilla Fields perfume and I think of it so fondly. Vanilla! It’s a UNIVERSALLY PLEASANT SCENT.
Burning rubber and bourbon smoke. Ai-yi-yi!!!

I chortled at “Every favourite scent was once a stranger, as no one says” too! Rexie was your road trip companion, and you had a “book on tape” sounds like an adventure. Happy birthday month, Nicole!

  3. I find the B&BW sales personnel to be SO aggressive. For multiple reasons, I won’t shop there anymore, but I DO love their products. Lucky for me, I have that black market person selling lovely, scented B&BW hand soaps in the next town over. LOL! But really, wouldn’t vanilla be their best seller?? Maybe she was told to push the poor sellers because what person likes rose scented anything (besides the actual flower?)

    • You have a black market Bath and Body Works person??? This feels like a story I should know!
And THANK YOU, yes, I love roses! But I don’t love rose-scented items!

  4. I love Vanilla – in body lotion, candles, yogurt, ice-cream. How could one not like vanilla? What a weird sales tactic. And those who don’t return their shopping carts to the corral are the worst!

  5. Hi Nicole, I live in Germany and getting any kind of Lindt truffles poses no problem. I just checked: your postal strike seems to finally be over and although shipping overseas seems to cost an arm and a leg, I was thinking that I would love to send you some strawberry truffles. I truly enjoy reading your blog, which I came across via Swistle’s blog and thought that would be a nice way to say thank you for entertaining me on a very regular basis! Please let me know, so we can get details figured out.

  6. I think that interaction with the sales clerk would cause me to flee the store, without buying anything.

Nicole. What are the odds that we both have a blog post today about a trip to Bath and Body Works??? Not sure if your store has the same products, but did you smell the “Brazil” candle? That’s the one I got, and it’s sooooo nice! Although, apparently people have very different opinions when it comes to scents. That saleslady… how annoying! Honestly, I don’t really like chatting with salespeople. I just like to smell all the candles on my own and make up my mind.
Glad your roadtrip was fun- I love the photos. Especially the one with Rex in the backseat.

    • I don’t do candles but I did smell the Brazil body lotion – I feel like it was kind of fruity? I don’t know, I sniffed a lot of things, so I may be conflating it with something else.

  8. Favorite part: “Every favourite scent was once a stranger, as no one says.”

I have had similar experiences at Bath & Body Works, where the salesperson is SO FRIENDLY but also seems to think that everyone likes the same scents, and that those are the same as the ones the salesperson likes—which feels like a challenging belief to maintain while working at a Bath & Body Works.

  9. Perhaps it’s a good thing she doesn’t work on commission. I want to check out the Allegra Goodman book–I’m definitely fine with a character/slice of life book.

  10. That book sounds like one I’d like. I’d been waved off of Isola by Lisa–I don’t want to read something heavy and sad. I read Cold Mountain ages ago, and I still resent it for being so unrelentingly terrible and depressing.

That salesperson! Yikes. Personal fact: I used to wear actual vanilla extract as my perfume back in the day. My mother is still convinced that’s the reason Rick fell in love with me–because I smelled like something baking!

A friend of mine took a part-time job at Barnes and Noble, just for the fun of it in her retirement. She loves books and thought it would be great to help people find books. HA HA…she was NOT allowed to suggest any books except the ones they were pushing that month.
So I suspect the fragrances she was pushing on you were the ones the salespeople were instructed to push that month, not because she really thought you shouldn’t have a different one. But it sure is a funny story!

  12. See this interaction is an example of why I try my best to avoid sales people. The pushiness from someone who isn’t even working on commission would drive me bananas but I would probably let her talk me into buying some terrible smelling rose lotion because I don’t like conflict… So I avoid interactions so as not to get myself into a situation where I pretend to agree.

I’m glad you had a good trip to visit your parents and that the weather cooperated. But how annoying that we have to be thankful the weather cooperated in MAY.

I plan to read that Goodman book. It sounds so relatable since I have a drama-prone family. I am in full agreement w/ that section you shared from the Jimenez book – how you treat service workers and whether you return your cart kind of tells me all I need to know about whether you are someone I’d want to spend any time around.

  13. We have a wine and spirits store in the US (perhaps you have them too?), Total Wine and More. They have their ‘winery direct’ wines, which means that they have a partnership of some kind with that winery. Perhaps no middleman, I don’t know (or care). What I do know and care about is that these wines are 90% of the time LESS THAN in taste than the other wines, but should you make the mistake of asking a sales person for help, this is where they have to steer you. I am not rude (or honest) enough to say ‘Um, anything but that’, so I just avoid interacting with them. I’m sorry you had rose pushed on you. It’s such a grandma smell.

I love that Heidi has offered to send you chocolates! And that Nance used to wear vanilla extract as her signature scent! I love the internet right now. Also, I’m glad you had a wonderful visit with your parents!

  14. I’m so glad the road trip to your mom was fun (and very beautiful, too!) and that she loved her Vanilla lotion! I had to laugh at your shopping experience — that’s one for the books! (I hate rose smell unless it’s on roses sent or given to me!) That first of the books sounds terrific and a good car/waiting room/bathroom book (short stories or essays or vignettes that you can pick up but not commit to having to spend a lot of time all at once to keep the thread of it!

  15. How does anyone know what someone likes to smell like just by looking at them? 🤣 I saw Nance’s comment about wearing vanilla extract, and now I’m thinking of doing that—it’s a lot cheaper than perfume.

I’m glad you had a good visit with your parents! .💜
