Every single morning, the first thing I do after waking is carefully make my way down the stairs and pour my pre-measured water from the coffee pot into the appropriate receptacle in the machine, and then press start. After that I drink two big glasses of water and head to the bathroom for my morning ablutions. The only variation to the routine is that on weekends, I sleep slightly later and so I let Rex out of his crate prior to the ablutions, but always, always, always, as they say FIRST, COFFEE.
So it was that Saturday morning rolled around, and I was coming out of the bathroom freshly washed and brushed, thinking I would pour myself a cup of that sweet, sweet nectar on my way to let Rex back in. I noticed that there was a fairly significant pool of water on the countertop, surrounding the coffee maker. I don’t know about you, but I frequently spill water when I’m pouring from the pot to the receptacle, so I thought that I had done just that, although it DID register that a) it was a fairly large volume, more than my usual splash, and b) how did I not notice? Well, I have not noticed more significant things than some water, so I wiped it up, let Rex in, told him he was a good boy and I love him so much, yes I do, yes I do, and then I went on with my day.
I was a little annoyed that my mistake had led to less coffee than normal, but I moved on with my life.
The next morning, as I poured the water into the receptacle, I reminded myself to be very careful. I didn’t spill a drop. By the time I returned to pour myself a cup, there was an even bigger pool of water, and now it was spilling on the floor.
This exact thing has happened to me before, and it was April 2020. It felt like a crisis at the time, because buying anything was such a ridiculous hassle, and what could be more important than a coffee maker? Probably you are thinking many things are more important than a coffee maker, but friends, you don’t live with me. You don’t live in fear of being murdered, stabbed, or, at the very least, spoken to sharply because Nicole Didn’t Get Her Coffee. Coffee or complete mental and emotional breakdown, choose one.
Happily for everyone involved, this did not devolve into a crisis because a) the coffee maker was still brewing coffee, albeit at a lower volume than anticipated, b) my husband has a fancy espresso maker that I do not know how to use and would unlikely be able to figure out in a caffeine-less state, but he would probably get up and make me a SERIES of espressos if things got desperate, and c) I remembered we still had our old coffee maker from our Calgary house, still in protective wrapping from the moving company. I pulled it out of the pantry and it happily worked, although my son asked darkly for how long? He seemed nervous that the old one would just as suddenly start malfunctioning, and THEN where would we be? You need to buy a new coffee maker, Mom, he said in an uncharacteristically forceful way.

And indeed, he was right to be concerned, because not three days passed before I noticed a small but distinct dribble of water beside the coffee maker. My husband is on the case, believe me.
I am a terrible coffee addict, I know, and it’s not something I feel moved to change about myself. I am harming no one by consuming vast amounts of coffee between 4 and 9am every day, and, in fact, I would probably harm someone if I didn’t. At the very least I would not be radiating sunshine, let’s put it that way.

My coffee habit has been going strong lo these past thirty-eight years, which makes me marvel at the idea that there are people in this world who don’t drink coffee at all and still function normally and non-murderously. I feel true amazement and wonder at this. What is your life like? I want to ask. Some people drink their first coffee of the day mid-morning, after accomplishing many things, and some people drink coffee in the afternoon. Some people drink it after dinner! Some people have one cup a day, no more, and some people drink it sporadically during the week. Nothing gives me more of a the world is a rich tapestry feeling than hearing these anecdotes.
Well. Baby, baby, it’s a wild world. I have been the recipient of much amazement as to my own habits, non-coffee-related. I loathe pie, for example, and even the idea of a cooked apple makes me want to heave. I refuse to have celery in my house and I do not, as a rule, enjoy black or green tea. I fall asleep by 8:30pm and I prefer having spoilers rather than endure any tension in TV or movies. I reread books frequently, I’ve never worn eyeshadow, and I think Old Dutch Ketchup potato chips were the greatest snack food of all time, although I haven’t consumed them in many years. There is room for all of us and our personal opinions and preferences in this life, and as long as I get my coffee, everything is happiness.

Weekly Reading
On the topic of the world being a rich tapestry: books! What could be more varied and individual than reading tastes? I thought I was making a dent in my pile of library books, but as I took three back to the library, four more came in. So it’s a one-step-forward-two-steps-back situation.

The Bright Years. This book follows a family and their secrets, and ultimately their healing. It spans decades, and I really liked the little pop culture and current events that were peppered in through the years. There is a child given up for adoption who is looking for his birth mother, there is a chosen family, there is a supportive mother-in-law who chooses her granddaughter over her alcoholic son. Speaking of the latter, if you know me, you know I HATE plotlines about alcoholism and addiction, but I pushed through, and I was rewarded with a nice redemption arc and message.

Mean Moms. WHAT A HOOT. This book was so fun to read. I have also read this author’s Bad Summer People, and let me tell you, she has the concept of Ultra Rich People Behaving Badly down! Whereas Bad Summer People follow a crowd who “summer” on an exclusive island off the East Coast, Mean Moms follows a group of Manhattan moms at an exclusive private school. Strange things start happening to a couple of these moms just when a woman from Miami arrives at their school. Is it a coincidence? Or is someone out to get them? This book was an absolute riot and the sections are divided by WhatsApp chains, and if you have ever been in a parenting-or-school-related text chain, this will resonate deeply. I enjoyed this so much.

Not My Type. Normally I avoid any and all mentions of the current US president, so at first glance it is odd that I would pick up this book, which details his trial and subsequent conviction as to the matter of sexual assault and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll. However, I listened to interviews of the acclaimed 81-year-old writer on a number of podcasts and immediately fell in love with her. What a fascinating and brave woman! This book is horrifying and also a triumph, and when the current president claimed that he just grabs women by the pussy, well, that is exactly what he did do in a Bergdorf Goodman changing room in 1996. This book contains official court transcripts as well as the author’s own notes on the trial. As a note, IF the current president ever pays the $83 million owed, the author has decided that all – ALL – of it will go to charities and causes that said president loathes, such as women’s reproductive rights, voting rights, and climate solutions.
On that note, I will sign off for the week. I hope you are all enjoying the things you individually enjoy, perhaps a hot beverage? Say a little prayer that my backup coffee maker doesn’t meet its maker, so to speak, before the backup arrives. xo
This is so interesting to me because 2 years ago, our coffee maker started doing the same thing! I couldn’t figure out what was causing it, so into the garbage it went. Fortunately, I had 2 back up coffee makers, new and still in boxes, from my mom’s basement. That means I have 1 back up now, thank goodness. Coffee is not necessarily a must for me, but I do enjoy 2 lattes every morning, and one right before bed (I only drink decaf, so you probably think I’m a weirdo!) And I drink a cup of green tea after lunch and dinner. I do enjoy my hot beverages.
You’ve never worn eye shadow?? Mind blown! But girl, a cup of coffee with a warm fruit pie is heaven on Earth!!!
I’d be murdering people too – not for coffee, but for depriving me of my black tea with milk! I drink it by the gallon and am fully addicted, so I completely get your coffee obsession.
I follow a lovely blogger called Debbie who drinks only – wait for it – WATER! No coffee, no tea… can you imagine??
Thankfully, she redeems herself with the occasional margarita, so she’s definitely human!
I don’t drink coffee every day, but if I do it’s usually mid-morning. I have 2-3 cups a tea a day. The first cup, with breakfast, is always herbal, usually hibiscus. This may have something to do with the fact that I work part-time and rarely start until after lunch. I have coffee or milky black tea mid-morning and then I usually want a second dose of caffeine (black or green tea, no milk) mid-afternoon, while I am working. I do love a latte, though, so if I’m out and about I will often get one (decaf if it’s past mid-afternoon).
I usually only drink one cup of coffee a day, but it is 100% not optional and it is on automatic brew each weekday morning. Functionally it is also my alarm since our room is right next to the kitchen.
Well, as you probably know, I don’t drink coffee (I know what you’re thinking- what a sad life). But I LOVE my black tea, and you also probably remember the tragedy of last summer where I could only have green tea. When I read things like this, I WISH I liked coffee- you just make it sound so good. But, I am indeed enjoying my nice hot Earl Grey right now, so I’m happy. You definitely need a back up coffee maker in your life.
I love the photo of Rex with his giant white paws!
Oh if our coffee pot started acting up, you can bet I’d be buying a new one STAT. The carafe of our coffee pot cracked earlier this year. It was usable for a few more days but a new one was ordered extremely promptly. I also need coffee so very badly. Guess who doesn’t drink a single drop of it? Phil! He will occasionally have a coke in the afternoon but that’s the extent of his caffeine consumption. I think we should donate his body to science to figure out how he survived all these years without caffeine. Lol.
I really liked The Bright Years but it was a hard read w/ the themes of alcohol and how it can destroy lives. Mean Moms sounds like it could work for me although some of the school-drama type of books are triggering for me for some reason, even though I’ve never been involved in school drama as a parent? Right now I’m reading “Slanting Towards the Sea” which is making me want to visit Croatia so badly!! I heard about it on Sarah’s Bookshelves Live, my fave book podcast. She interviewed the author – for which English is a 2nd language. I’m blown away by her abilities to write such a great book in her freaking 2nd language!
I can completely relate. I am a coffee addict too – but only before noon! I do the prep the night before and set the timer so my cup of java is ready for me as soon as I wake up! I then tend to drink the rest of the half pot through the morning as I write or read. I don’t have room to keep a backup coffee maker handy, but I do keep a few of those instant sachets JUST IN CASE, although I do not like instant coffee but in a crisis situation it will have to do. The only time I could not abide the smell or taste of coffee was during my pregnancy. The body works in mysterious ways. I too do not like black or green tea but can drink herbal teas.
I at first thought this was going to be about the skyrocketing price of coffee and I was here to commiserate. (It used to be that, at my local grocery store, Peet’s coffee was $6.99 a bag and something like Starbucks coffee was $9.99 a bag and some of the fancier coffees was $11.99 a bag, and if anything went on sale, I was to buy that for my husband, or get Peet’s. Sometimes Starbucks would go on sale for $6.99! Sometimes the fancier coffees would go on sale for $8.99! But last week I was perusing the coffee aisle and PEET’S was ON SALE for $9.99!!!!! What is happening?!)
Anyway, I am one of those people who do not drink coffee! At all! I do drink black tea, daily, though, so I am still addicted to caffeine.
Just added Mean Moms to my Libby holds; it sounds extremely my jam.
I like instant coffee with milk and sugar free syrup. At the moment, I have sugar free English Toffee syrup. Frou Frou coffee! I will drink it black though, if necessary. I also love black tea, plain. I’ve tried a coffee pot, a Keurig, and a percolator, and I really just like instant coffee. Easy, no fuss caffeine to the rescue! I’ve given up coffee a couple of times, but I always come back. Giving it up didn’t solve whatever problem I thought it was causing. I hope your new coffee maker comes soon!
I too drink vast amounts of coffee, probably too much, and even lately at times in the afternoon. Yikes! I do make it with a few scoops of decaf so that helps, but I just don’t want to imagine a life without it. Strangely, ever since my second pregnancy I cannot drink black tea, the thought of it makes me want to gag. I probably drank too much of it while avoiding coffee during that time!
I don’t want to jinx my coffee maker, but I think it’s been two years since I’ve had to replace it. I look forward to my morning coffee every day, and I also enjoy an afternoon cup. I used to have an evening coffee too, but I slowly phased that out last year.
I loved learning about your preferences. It’s fun to hear what other’s like and don’t like- and to see how alike and different we are. I love pie, though I could see how squshy fruit might gross some people out. I got a kick out of hearing you’ve never worn eye shadow! My eyes were coated in it all through the late 80s. In the 90s, I started using blush as eye shadow. Now, I don’t use anything.
You are putting words to my #1 fear. I don’t feel like I’m high maintenance, but I do need my one cup of coffee in the morning, and it needs to be Coffee the Way that I Like It. Is that really too much to ask?
I had to come up with a redundant system for travel, because hotels usually have weird pod brewers and I can’t count on Airbnbs to have drip coffee makers. That’s why I travel with coffee, coffee filters, a pour over filter, and an electric kettle. I have to compromise when I fly by leaving the electric kettle at home, and so far that only meant that I had to drink Nespresso a few nights in BC, which I don’t mind every once in a while.
My husband and in laws are among the odd ducks of this world who either do not drink coffee or who can take it or leave it. I don’t understand.
I don’t think that I want to read E. Jean Carroll’s book right now but I have no doubt that it is incredible. She had nothing to gain by speaking out and pursing legal action and to steal another political phrase, nevertheless she persisted. Bravo to her! Bonus points for her reclaiming the title.
I have a cup of coffee more mornings; I did drink it black for a while to prove I could do it, but I do like a hint of white (cream, milk, SILK PEPPERMINT MOCHA).
I think I’ve reached my max capacity for books talking about abuse for this year. As weird as it might sound, I feel like I have a certain amount of headspace to give to big, weighty books and then I need a break.
I’m with Suzanne; the cost of coffee has gone through the roof. I think my husband told me last week it’s up 41% over this time last year???
My brother and one sister don’t drink ANY hot drinks at all. I’m a bit jealous, but oh I love a cuppa something warm. That said, I don’t drink a lot of coffee. Max two cups a day and that’s enough. Plus, as you know, my sleep is often hit-and-miss so I try to limit caffeine.
I find it inexpressibly delightful that you are a ceaselessly kind, vegan, yoga-enthusiast who scorns green tea and loves coffee – I don’t know exactly why, because drinking coffee isn’t like mainlining black tar heroin, but I still love it.Also I am now going to make tea because it’s fucking snowmageddon here and I might as well at least try to make it cozy.
BEEN THERE! I love my coffee maker, and I refuse to give it up. It is reliable, makes good coffee, and I hate how much it will cost to replace it. Luckily, when this EXACT SAME THING happened to my coffee maker, I put my handyman husband on it, and he was able to fix it easily. All he had to do was replace the hose inside.
I look so forward to my morning coffee. I don’t need it–I only drink decaf–but I love coffee. It’s a morning comfort and treat.
I hope your coffee maker arrives soon, Nicole! I’m one of your friends who’s never drunk a cup of coffee :). I love the smell of it, but I didn’t like the taste when I tried it. Tea, which I started drinking in my late thirties, gets me my caffeine. A has one of those fancy espresso makers as well, he uses it regularly to fuel up for night shifts and for guests.
That sunset pic is gorgeous…
I *was* surprised to Carroll’s book in your stack last week, but she’s a hero… I used to love her column… was it in Marie Claire?
Also, I’m chuckling at “Say a little prayer that my backup coffee maker doesn’t meet its maker, so to speak” You have such a way with words.
I wonder if, in addition to a new back up model, you might want to have a low tech backup as well? Like a French Press or a Pour Over? I mean, what do you do if the power is out? What if it is out in your entire neighborhood?
I hope you get a new coffee maker soon, or perhaps you can fix the hose like Nance’s husband did (impressive!) I’m glad you had a backup.
I liked The Bright Years, I liked the redemption arc on the alcoholism issue. And I liked that grandma chose the kid instead of the dad, when it came down to it.
I have had the same coffee maker since I was married 30 years ago that we only pull out for holidays! I used to have a major diet Coke addiction and I’ve moved on to a pot black tea (half decaf) in the morning, usually a diet something at lunch, and more decaf tea the rest of the day (hot or cold). Earl Grey is my very favorite!
I am sending all of the good thoughts for your backup coffee maker! How smart to keep the backup and how lovely for it to be able to sweep in and save the day! I recently gave up my morning coffee because I had given up coffee creamer and discovered that coffee with just milk did not bring me the joy that coffee with a ridiculous amount of creamer did. I do still drink coffee, though, just as a treat when I’m out and about, and have tea in the mornings now.
I love coffee, but only from a proper espresso machine. We have a machine at home, but I have not had a coffee from our current machine because G bought it after I stopped drinking coffee due to more frequent migraines. I want to try coffee again and see, but I need to wait for a good time (hormone-wise and schedule-wise). Luckily, I never “needed” coffee.
We don’t even own a coffeemaker. You’d be utterly confused by our house. A doctor told me that if I cut out caffeine, my headaches would go away. My headaches did not go away, but I still don’t drink caffeine, so they can’t tell me that it’s my drinking habits that cause the headaches. But I do miss occasionally getting a mocha. I sometimes get a decaf americano and it’s not really the same.
Anyway, I hope you get a coffeemaker ASAP. We wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt!
I lived for coffee as well, until I was told I had to give it up (for health reasons). I was broken hearted but did and now survive on one sad mug of Swiss water process decaf a day. Sigh. I laughed at your paragraph about your oddities. You are a unique gem aren’t you. You have NEVER worn eye shadow?? Wow!
This is how coffee makers break! My last one also started leaking on the bottom… it might have also involved a porous water tube inside). I can definitely relate to the panic you felt… I suggest keeping a Chemex/pour-over filter handy!
I don’t drink coffee and I probably function a lot like you! I’ll have an occasional iced coffee in the summer. Does that count? The caffeine really gets to me. I can’t even have a Diet Coke if I’m craving one, past 6pm! My Mom drank coffee all day, every day. That was her beverage of choice. If you’re healthy, why spoil a good thing?..lol
I don’t understand people who can function without caffeine. Like, it just does not compute for me. How are they not sleepy all the time?! I need my morning coffee to get me going, and if something happened to my coffeepot, a new one would be ordered immediately. Godspeed, coffeemaker!
do you drink it black? woo! I still can’t do it. Since we moved here, I haven’t found a coffee shop/brand that I love, so it has been not a necessity.
but i can imagine missing something we are so attached to. I drink mate every morning so I take it everywhere/
YES I hear you on the coffee emergency. We have a variety of ways to make coffee in the house, and the only one I know how to do is the drip coffee maker. The last one met it’s maker in the same way, water all over the counter, just stopped working. And then we bought a new one, and it didn’t work right out of the box, in fact, it started smoking when I first plugged it in and probably would have burned down the whole house, but thankfully didn’t. So now the current one is going strong, but there is a backup 4 cup coffee maker in the basement, as well as a french press, about 6 mokapots, two espresso makers, and probably a few other ways to make coffee, JUST IN CASE.
My biggest shock of this post is that you have never worn eyeshadow? HOW IS THIS? WHY IS THIS? How did you avoid THIS? All of my Seventeen magazines showed me and my friends how to wear blue eyeshadow. Pink eyeshadow. ALL THE EYESHADOW.
It’s treason that a coffee maker only lasts five years. There should be laws against this injustive.
FABULOUS picture of the sky. Wow, you really captured it. I understand your coffee situation. We are much the same, even though at this stage we drink decaf. It’s still what I want before I talk to anyone or do anything. I make the coffee the night before, usually when doing dinner prep. That way all I have to do in the morning before I’m really with the program is click the start button. No need to mess with measuring the water or coffee. Hope your morning coffee return smooths out. Will get you added to my blog list.
Waving hi as I make my blog rounds today.
That’s a bummer about your coffeemaker! I had that happen, except mine had a short or something so sometimes it would work and sometimes it would fritz out in the middle of a cycle. Luckily I have a backup French press that I use for camping, so I was not in a dire situation. I am glad you had a backup as well or things could get ugly!
I love my coffee so much. Currently, I’m on two nespresso pods/day although I confess- the last two days have been three! But, I have given up coffee at various point (internalized loathing) and I definitely felt awake and much more chill and slightly less tremulous…once the wicked headaches stopped. No real inclination to do that anytime soon but there were some benefits. But I loved the taste of coffee so much that I went back and loved it!
I have Coffee Angst right now, but not because of my coffee maker. I don’t have a coffee maker and have been relying on instant, which is *fine*, but… it’s not the best. And it sometimes upsets my stomach. Which makes me think I need a coffee maker, but…for one cup? So, current practice is, drink 1/2 cup of instant, make a face, switch to Diet Coke for my fizzy, never upsets my stomach, caffeine hit. And yes, I know it will kill me, but honestly, something has to and it might as well be something I enjoy. (Also? my parents keep a backup carafe but not a backup coffee maker and…I think we need to remedy that, because you and my mom are Coffee Twins…) (Also, I really do need a Coffee Solution, because, well, I do like GOOD coffee, sigh.)
