Nicole’s Favourite Things: The Fall Follies Edition
September 25, 2025 Beauty and body

I was at the dog park last week, walking in my usual loop, when I passed by a man I see quite frequently. He’s probably in his 70s, and he has two dogs, one of them a very young puppy. This is against the rules – dogs less than four months are not permitted in the dog park – but I am not The Dog Park Rule Enforcer, so I usually just nod and smile. I was doing that, when he said Have you ever heard of grounding? I had my earbuds in, and wasn’t sure if I heard him correctly, so I politely paused my podcast, raised my eyebrows and tilted my head.

It’s when you stand on the ground with bare feet, facing the sun, he said, and of course I DO know that, but it was such an unexpected question from such an unexpected source. Oh yes, I have heard of th…I started to say as I looked down to see that he was indeed standing with his face to the sun, shoeless. Bare feet. In the dog park.

I blinked behind my sunglasses and then said You’re very brave to do that in the dog park! Brave? Or crazy? At that very moment, his puppy ran up to me to show me the sandal he had in his mouth, and then ran off again as the man admonished him to return it.

I kept walking.

By the time I left the park, ten minutes later, the man was still chasing the puppy, wearing only one sandal. Then I heard him call to someone that the puppy had left his sandal in the long grass and he couldn’t find it.

I hope he was able to disinfect his foot when he got home. Either that or amputate it.

I’m not saying that was one of my Favourite Things, it’s more of a PSA. If you want to ground, maybe don’t do it in a dog park.

Nicole’s Favourite Things: The Fall Follies Edition

Grapes of Wrath

Almost all of the grapes on the vineyard behind our house are for wine, but the four rows directly behind our house – which we own – are concords. Once those grapes ripen, the air smells like grape juice, and I cannot even begin to express how wonderful it is to walk outside and be hit by that delicious scent.

This past month, until the grapes were all harvested, I would just walk outside and pick a bunch to snack on. Just before the harvest, I snipped off three bowlfuls to enjoy for a little longer. I don’t think I will ever not love the ability to have such fresh fruit right outside my door!

A Pear Affair

Speaking of fresh fruit, the pear crop has been incredible this year as well. My son requested a pear cake for his birthday, and I was happy to oblige.

I used my friend Julie’s (HI JULIE) recipe, and I will note here that I cut the sugar in half, and it was plenty sweet that way. I followed the recipe exactly for the penuche frosting, and it made at least three times as much frosting as one could possibly pile onto the cake.

I have made this recipe before, but I hadn’t noted this down at all, so I don’t know WHAT happened. I do know that I ended up throwing out a lot of frosting, because what else could be done? I suppose I could have frozen it for later use a) when was that going to be, b) chances are I would forget it was there and then later have to chisel frozen penuche out of a container, and c) OMG IT WAS SO MUCH FROSTING. Anyway, the cake was delicious, but I have noted: cut sugar in half, make 1/3 the amount of frosting.

These Shoes Are Made For Walking

Back in my running days, I was very choosy about my footwear, and would spend quite a bit of money buying the fancy Asics Gel-what-have-you shoes. But when I stopped running, I started to buy less expensive shoes – the Skecher Go Walks. I don’t know why I thought I didn’t deserve expensive footwear anymore, particularly since I walk a minimum of five kilometres a day, often more, but that’s what happened. Even without all that walking, I STILL DESERVE DECENT FOOTWEAR.

A few weeks ago, my left foot started hurting, a lot. No problem! I had bought a pair of Skechers on sale and was just waiting for my other pair to wear out before taking them out of the box. I donned my new shoes, went for a walk, and was in pain by the end of it. Worse, the pain started in my heel, and ominous music started playing in my head. I know what heel pain means: planter fasciitis.

No! My feet are my fortune! Or, at least a very important part of me. I fretted and fretted, rolling my foot on yoga balls and massaging it and generally feeling kind of stressed about it. Not only am I on my feet for hours every day, we are going on a vacation that requires a GREAT DEAL OF WALKING very soon! I can’t not be able to walk!

My husband not-so-gently suggested I was being cheap and immediately found me a pair of Asics trail runners, appropriate for the gravelly and sometimes rocky trails that Rex and I favour.

Foot pain – gone. Let this be a lesson for us all: cheap footwear is just not worth it. And this is also a lesson in why I didn’t do another no-shopping challenge! Sometimes needs must.

Progress Not Perfection

I read an interview in Cup of Jo, and as I was looking at the photos, I thought damn, that woman has great hair. Wouldn’t you know it, she happened to mention the hair product she uses: Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Treatment.

I ordered some, thinking it would be a good item for travel, cutting down on the many products I usually use. And friends, it worked like a dream. A DREAM!

Not only that, but my hair still felt great the next day – without washing or adding more product.

Jane, Meet The Dollhouse

I have mentioned my friend Michelle’s incredible and uplifting blog before (HI MICHELLE), and in particular I have mentioned her absolutely delightful dollhouse. Every single post is more wonderful than the last – it just gets better and better. Well, I don’t know how she is going to top this one, because she obtained a Jane Austen doll. Jane Austen! With the gnomes in the dollhouse! I am surprised I didn’t spin right off this planet.

I’m not going to steal any photos from her, obviously – you’ll just have to go to look for yourself! But in honour of her, I wore (one of) my Jane Austen tees, which is also a Favourite Thing.

Outfit of the Month

This exact outfit has been an OOTM before, but since I am shopping my closet these days – with the exception of this month’s shoes! – I thought it deserved to shine.

Yesterday my husband and I were invited to a tour and tasting at a very fancy, architecturally incredible winery, and this was the perfect choice. Sorel boots for walking and standing, tights because wineries can be really cold, and my favourite lululemon t-shirt dress. Perfectly comfortable and cute!

And now, as alluded to, I am off on an adventure! I will be taking a blog break and will see you all on the other side. Take care of yourselves, friends. xo

  1. My mom has all kinds of fruit trees in her tiny yard (in California) and she loves it.

Noah had the opposite experience with a carrot cake he made this week. He managed to get it frosted, but he felt there wasn’t enough and he had to spread it thin. I suggested leaving the sides bare, like your pear cake, but he wouldn’t hear of it.

    Happy adventuring!

  2. I’m so glad the new shoes took care of the pain! My goodness, Nicole, you still “deserve” the good shoes even if you don’t walk at all, but you do! You need the shoes!

Have a great trip. I look forward to hearing about it after you’re back.

  3. Hi Gnicole! You brightened my day by talking about my dollhouse visit from Jane Austen! I’m seriously envious of your Jane Austen t-shirt! Your outfits are gorgeous, as always. I love the necklace that you often wear, shaped like a flower. Your hair looks so luxurious and healthy! I may need to check out that product! Having good shoes is very important. I’m unreasonably fussy about shoes and have a hard time finding some I like. I hope you have a wonderful vacation! I’ll miss you and will look forward to reading all about your adventures! xo

    • Oh thank you Michelle! I have had that lotus necklace for years. It’s handmade by a lady from Vancouver, and I love all her things!
I think you need that shirt too! We could be twins!

  4. On our run in North Germany (visiting Kai’s mum) this morning we passed a pear tree, branches heavy with fruit. I grabbed one off the GROUND and took a bite – perfect! And since there was no dog park nearby, I *think* it was safe to eat. (By the way, why are puppies banned from dog parks?!)

If I had even half your kitchen skills, I’d be back there with a basket, turning those pears into a cake instead of just eating them straight.

Wishing you the best time in Morocco! Those new trail shoes are going to earn their keep!

    • Catrina, puppies less than four months are not allowed because they don’t have all their shots before then, and also dogs can play roughly, so I think there’s a liability issue.
Is there anything so wonderful as a fresh ripe pear? Pear cake is great too!

  5. Okay, but that story about Shoeless Joe in the Dog Park IS absolutely one of my favourite things for today.
I ALWAYS find frosting recipes make too much for the cake. Much of it freezes well though, so I often do that.
Your hair literally looks bouncin’ and behavin’ wth.
You will pry my Asics off my cold dead feet. My feet and back are such a mess, it is expensive footwear for life.

  6. Nicole, your hair always looks fabulous but HOLY MOLY. I need to buy some of that 5-in-1 immediately!

Those shoes are really cute and HOORAY for no foot pain. I have a hard time buying myself new shoes, too. They are expensive! But when a person walks a lot, shoes wear out and SHOULD be replaced.

Bare feet at the dog park. What even????

I was aware of four sorts of grounding before reading this post (intentional, punitive, airtraffic control, emotional/mental) but I had never heard of the one you described! Now I am really curious why he asked you, YOU, and also THEN, and also WHY, at the dog park, was he barefoot. Why. Will you encounter him again? And will he be wearing shoes? Sadly we may never know the answers to any of these questions! Life is a rich tapestry, Nicole. I hope he finds his way into one of your novels.

    • Oooh he WOULD make a good character! I have seen him many times but always with shoes. And also, I think I just give out some kind of “talk to me” aura – often it takes me an extra 15-20 minutes to do our walk because I have so many conversations. Some of them are REALLY interesting!

  7. I feel like Dog Park Man might be living his best don’t give a fuck life, you know?
I have a quart of frosting in my fridge (not even my freezer) that’s got to be a few years old. Do you know how it got there? It was me thinking, “Ooops I made too much. I’ll just save it for later.” Truth to tell, I hate frosting cakes – always so so so messy and sticky and goopy.
I read somewhere that you should always spend money on things that are between you and the ground- namely mattresses and shoes. Glad you got new running shoes! May they take you through may miles!
    Have a great adventure!

    • Mattresses and shoes! So smart!
I mean, Dog Park Man is living his best life, but also, think of all the pee!
Hahaha that was exactly my fear, that I would find a brick of frozen frosting years later!

  8. Always buy the good shoes! I’ve learned that lesson too. Enjoy your trip Nicole! I can’t wait to hear all about it.

  9. Extra frosting is NEVER a problem in my life! Put it on graham crackers. Put it on toast. Just take a spoonful and eat it for a sugar boost. Hm. As I type this, I’m realizing that my sugar addiction is too real.

I have foot issues and never cheap out on footwear. NEVER. Because if I take even ONE dog walk with a pair of Skechers, I will be hobbled. If it makes you feel better, the average price of a pair of my shoes is closing in on $200 and I’m not opposed to spending $500 on shoes. I also tend to buy shoes that are repairable, so many of my shoes last years and years because I take them to the cobbler. (Not athletic shoes, obviously.)

I desperately want to use Living Proof products, but my husband hates how they smell. That is all. I am just sharing that information with you to get sympathy.

    • Awww…too bad. I think the scents are really nice!
You know, I have never thought of putting frosting on toast, but now that you mention it…that sounds like a plan!
You get what you pay for in life, I think, but especially so in footwear!

  10. Now that I saw that photo of the cake, I need to make one. And I agree with NGS about extra frosting, especially if it is chocolate. I’m not really a fan of Vanilla (sometimes I make vanilla so I WON”T be tempted to eat it by the spoonful. lol

    Have a great trip.

  11. My daughter uses Living Proof products, but I don’t think she has tried that one. She has beautiful curls like you. My hair is super straight, but maybe my hair would love this as well?

I’ve been fighting some planar fasciitis recently too. I am VERY particular about my shoes, meaning I don’t care what they cost. They can be $20 or $250, if they work, they work. Ever since my RA diagnosis, my feet are the first thing to go. SO, I am going to check these shoes out, THANK YOU.

  12. I love Living Proof. Their dry shampoo is also really wonderful.
Have so much fun on your adventure! I can’t wait to see pictures! 💜

  13. I have taken notes and the Living Proof may be on its way to me soon!!

Michelle’s dollhouse is just such a beacon of joy in this crazy, messed-up world. Everything that happens there is magical and lovely.

I hope you have the BEST trip and I can’t wait to hear all about it. Safe travels, my friend <3

  14. Well, first of all I remember that man from when I was there last month. But what the what with anyone, let alone a dog person being barefoot in the dog park???? I have no words, except to love the puppy all the more for stealing his shoes.

Hubs and I have had many conversations where the other person is cheaping out to their detriment. He is very prone to PF, so it drives me nuts whenever I hear of him cutting corners on footwear.

Sigh, since I don’t have any on site grape vines we’re going to the grape and apple orchard this weekend with the fam. Homemade grape jelly and apple crisp will be had!

Happy Travels! I can’t wait to hear about your adventures.

  15. Some people are just … earthy, you know? Or maybe something is, sadly, amiss with Dog Park Guy.

I’ve never, ever heard of throwing frosting away. When I was little, we put it on graham crackers or plain vanilla wafers or shortbread cookies. Or my mother would bake a quick pan of cupcakes or a loaf cake and take it to the neighbours or I’d take it to school for the teacher. Or later, when we were older, she’d take it in to work.

The title of your cookbook is wonderful. I hope it’s part of a series wherein the word Cake is replaced with other nouns like Cookies, Pies, and Cocktails.

    • Nance, until Engie mentioned it above, I never once thought about using it on something else. I never have graham crackers or other plain cookies around, and the only cookies I frost are sugar cookies at Christmas…ah well, it is gone now. But it was delicious!
The book is so interesting. My friend Julie had posted something on IG about cake, and she was trolled by someone who said she was basically a disgusting human and didn’t need more cake. Imagine! But she took this horrible thing and then blocked out the words she didn’t like, and made a whole cookbook out of it. She is a wonderful person and she has had her share of internet haters, which is awful.
Some people ARE earthy, and now Dog Park Guy is earthy and probably urine/ fecal matter-y too!

  16. Fresh grapes. OFF THE VINE. Stop it. I want. I covet. I need.

Have the best trip my friend; savor every moment.

I can not be cheap with my shoes because my feet have been giving me issue since I was pregnant in 1993. Only the best for my tootsies and even with those, I tend to have to limit my standing/walking; it’s a pain in the ass. I mean, feet/legs.

    Your hair is amazing!

Laughing at your frosting dilemma! LOL

    • Suz, I have trouble with circulation and varicose veins, and so if I have a lot of standing, or when I fly or take a long car trip, I have to wear compression stockings. And if you’re thinking cute little knee highs, think again! Medical grade, full on pantyhose-style, and my very best pair is in “nude” and so I look like my own grandma with these thick beige stockings. Well, whatcha going to do?

  17. Barefoot in a dog park??!! Ewwww
As soon as you said you stopped buying “good” shoes I sort of gasped. All the walking you do??!! I’m happy your husband bought you the good shoes. I used to run marathons and now I run a bit and walk a lot and I buy the same shoes I always have (pricey ASICS ones!). Feet are so important.
Have an amazing trip! Can’t wait to hear about it.

  18. I don’t spend high amounts on most things, but running/walking shoes are one of the things I do think are worth spending on! I learned this when I was working in the shoe department years ago. Before that I had only ever bought cheap shoes so did not know the difference! I am so glad that it helped right away.

I am giggling at your comment above to Suz about compression stockings! Do you wear pants over them or do you let your freak flag fly and show them?

    • Ha! I wear pants! But I HAVE worn them with a skirt before, when we were going to Mexico in the summer and I wanted to just take them off when we arrived in the airport bathroom. I also have some black ones that I have worn with skirts that look just like normal tights. But they aren’t quite as good as the beige ones! I have had the beige ones for like 15 years now.

  19. We don’t have any rules in the dog park, except that you need to pick up the poo, dogs cannot be off lead near the picnic areas and playground, and your dog needs to be under effective control, but it sounds like your dog parks are different to ours. Ours are just normal parks that allow dogs to be off-lead. I love your outfit of the month, and your hair with the curls is fabulous.

    • Yes, these parks here in Kelowna are fenced-off areas that have quite a few rules with regards to dog size (there are separate places for small dogs), whether or not their vaccinations are up-to-date, whether they are fixed or intact, etc. Picking up after them is a must as well, but you know there are some stragglers in that department (BARE FEET MELISSA BARE FEET EEWWWW)

  20. foot, leg is our most precious part right? a big niggle bothers a lot! I still have some issues with the knee and feel quite frustrated about it. So I can totally relate. And I just throw out two pairs of running shoes as they’ve completed 500 miles and time to move on.
I got try that dry shampoo next time I go to the US.
    Love your black shirt.

  21. I am SO GLAD the shoes solved your foot problem! That’s the thing about foot pain- yes it sucks, but there are so many easy things you can do to fix it.
i love the Jane Austen t shirt!
Have fun and I CANNOT WAIT to hear all about this adventure of yours!

  22. I love that you grow concord grapes! What do you make with them?! I get the shoe thing..with my lifetime of back issues and now knees, I can’t even look at sexy gorgeous heels anymore. It can turn a cute outfit into a dorky one really fast. It makes me sad. Enjoy your blog break! When will you be back?

    • Judy, I’m back! I don’t make anything with concords, although at one time in my life I would make it into a thick juice and then blend with apples to make fruit leather. Now we just eat them as is!

  23. Funnily enough, I am kind of the opposite on the shoe front, and am a recent convert ( a few months ago) to skechers! I’d always bought more expensive walking/ running shoes before and then got annoyed when my bunions wore holes in them in no time. So I bought a pair for half the price of my usual kind of shoes and wore them to the UK and South Africa in March. I figured if the bunions were going to wear them out in a couple of months I might as well go cheap. I have done SO many steps in them ( I’m a daily walker of around 10 000 steps) and there is not yet any sign of a hole from the bunions. And they’ve been really comfortable! I guess the saying “ you get what you pay for” doesn’t apply in my case!

    • Maureen, I do like my Skechers for day-to-day things, but for my walks with Rex they just weren’t cutting it anymore. I love how many styles they have, they are cute shoes!

  24. I come back and you leave! I also find that using half the amount of sugar while baking is just right for us. I also notice that recipes make too much frosting and way too much dressing for salads. It’s wack!

Interesting about the shoes . . . I swear by Skechers. I call them my slipper shoes as I find them to be the most comfortable and they last forever for me.

    • Bijoux, I do still love my Skechers, but not for my long walks with Rex. I don’t think they have enough support for the rocky pathways – but I do love them for just daily things!

  25. Sorels are great boots! I also love Thursday Boots company, and Blondos for sneakers. I actually JUST said goodbye to my very favorite pair of Blondo sneakers that Tony gifted to me for Christmas- in 2019! I am now in search of another pair of Blondos since they are waterproof. There are ancle boots that I have on my wish list from la Canadienne – expensive but I have a feeling they are warm as hell and will last me a while.

    https://www.nordstromrack.com/s/dawson-faux-shearling-lined-chelsea-boot-women/8512381?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FBrands%2FLa%20Canadienne&color=200

    • Blondos are SUCH nice boots and I don’t have any! Maybe when mine wear out I will go for it! I think it is worthwhile spending more on footwear – it’s so important!

  26. Oh, good shoes are SO IMPORTANT. I am glad your husband pushed you to invest into some good trail walking shoes.

I am super-intrigued by that hair product. Thanks for sharing (and testing!) it.
