A Day In The Life: Saturday, What A Day, Grooving All Week With You
May 8, 2025 A Day In The Life

Everybody’s doing it, so I will too! Day in the Life posts are abounding in my lovely blog community, and I realized that a) it’s been a while for me, and b) I’ve never done a WEEKEND Day in the Life, and so here we are. Even though I have no job, no kids who are in the school system, and a retired husband, I do like to make a distinction about weekend activities. I could probably make every day the same, but I thrive on a schedule and routine, and I like to have a different one for weekends.

Saturday May 3

3:55 am. I wake up at my normal time, but then I remember it’s Saturday! So I doze off and on for a couple of hours before getting up just after 6:00 am. Every single day, I do the same thing when I get up: I go downstairs, start the coffee, and drink two big glasses of water. After that I let Rex out of his crate and after he’s joyfully greeted me like it’s been years instead of hours since we’ve seen each other, I let him outside. While he’s there I fill his bowls and do my morning ablutions – wash face, brush hair and teeth, apply SPF moisturizer – and then go check on him. He’s still out and about, probably sniffing the resident coyote or deer scents. When we moved here I fretted so much about having no fences, but it turns out dogs really can be trained to stay within their range, and he does. He’s out there for a while this morning, so I pull out my laptop, pour a big cup of coffee, and start answering blog comments.

I’ve been taking branched-chain amino acids in the morning lately; it’s supposed to help with perimenopause-related fatigue, and I think it does. I mean, I’m very much a Placebo Effect person, so who really knows. I let Rex in after about twenty minutes, and he flops at my feet while I edit my Monday post and read a few blogs, as well as my daily Simple Abundance reading and a Mary Oliver poem.

7:25 am. Time for walkies, but before that I give the downstairs bathroom a quick cleaning. I get dressed, brush my coffee teeth, put on a little mascara and tinted lip balm, and head out with my favourite fuzzy companion. We walk by the creek, which is super high, so we take the high path instead of the more-fun, but now flooded, low one. We meet and greet a lot of the regulars, including but not limited to the man with the chocolate lab who always has a ball in his mouth, an older fellow wearing a “Canada Is Not For Sale” hat – elbows up, sir! – a couple with a fifteen-pound version of Rex, and a gentleman who refers to himself as “Grandpa” and who, every single time I see him, tells me the same joke regarding a quote from Winston Churchill and the inscrutability of women. He always says Stop me if I’ve told you this before but at this point, I’m never stopping him.

9:05 am. I arrive home to a bustling kitchen, where my husband and son are making breakfast. I make my own breakfast – a green smoothie – chug some more water and coffee, and notice how gross the floors are, even though they’ve been vacuumed and washed twice this week already. I do it a third time, wash the blender and accoutrements, call the vet to order Rex’s preventative lice/ flea/ tick/ heartworm medication, brush my now-green teeth, and head downstairs.

9:45 am. After a week of more-strenuous workouts, on Saturday mornings I like a Peloton recovery ride, so I choose a 20 minute one. Following that I give myself the gift of a restorative yoga practice with a silent meditation, and Rex tries to hold my hand while I have my legs up the wall.

10:30 am. I feel great! I drink some more water, and then Rex and I head to the garden. It’s supposed to rain this afternoon so I’m taking advantage of the sunshine to check things out. I get super excited to see that my spinach is close to harvesting already, weed a little, and then head back to the house as the clouds gather.

10:55 am. I make our bed, clean the ensuite, and change out the towels, after which I take a shower. Makeup on, hair done, and dressed, I put an absolutely enormous load of laundry in the washer, write out a few birthday cards, and read a document my husband asked me to review.

12:15 pm. I drive to the library to exchange some books and then to the vet to pick up the medication plus Rex’s expensive dental chews. I mail the cards, go to the bank, and then grudgingly to the grocery store to get eggs. I have long considered the egg industry to be terribly cruel, and to assuage those feelings and compromise with my egg-loving guys, we get a biweekly egg delivery from a local urban farm; I can see the hens on one of our walk routes, and they look happy and healthy. We get two dozen every two weeks, but I did not account for our older son being here for a transitional week between his dorm closing and moving into his new apartment. I spend some time talking to the employee about which eggs are most humane, buy ANOTHER two dozen, and hope fervently that the humane eggs really are.

1:15 pm. I’m home, and I’m hungry. My general view of leftovers is simply NO. I will not. The exception to this is Greek salad; I have lately been making a ridiculously large salad on Friday so I can have the leftovers on Saturday; I round it out with a protein smoothie, supplements, and lots of water. After that I brush my teeth and start food prep: two dressings for the next day’s dinner, and pasta sauce for tonight. Fun fact: I wrote about using my grandma’s trick of adding baking soda in order to cut the acidity of tomato sauce when I worked for YMC; this was in 2015 and so, predictably, my editor titled it Tomato Sauce: You’re Doing It Wrong. Wow, did I get blowback from that. Good times on the internet. As I reminisce about the days when you could expect an attack on your character for adding baking soda to tomato sauce, I wash all the dishes and wipe down the countertops.

2:30 pm. I practice my DuoLingo – I’m learning French and Arabic along with my Spanish – and then fold the giant load of laundry while talking to my mother on the phone. I brush Rex’s teeth and let him outside with a chew, I bake a pumpkin loaf and chop up cauliflower while drinking wine. I wash the associated dishes again, because I am spending my wild and precious life doing so, and also because I cannot abide a messy kitchen.

4:00 pm. I pour another glass of wine and settle in to read for a while, occasionally ambling to the kitchen to cycle pans of cauliflower into the oven and heat up water for pasta.

6:00 pm. Dinner time! We eat the roasted cauliflower with the internet-maligned pasta and sauce (it’s delicious), and the guys clean up the kitchen while I take Rex outside. I go upstairs to change into my pajamas, I brush and floss, wash my face, and apply my night creams along with my hand and feet moisturizers.

7:15 pm. Thus sexily attired and lubed up, I come downstairs to snuggle with my husband on the couch. We watch a movie – The Hit Man – but it’s so boring that I fall asleep for half an hour, and then when I wake up I’m incredibly confused. I watch the end, not knowing what’s going on, and then I go to bed.

9:10 pm. Good night!

I hope you enjoyed this peek into my Saturday! I’d love to hear about yours. xo

  1. You’ll have to share more about the aminos – menopause is kicking my butt!

Had to laugh at the leftover comment – my husband DESPISES leftovers. I’m KINDA picky about them – but he’s always a hard NOPE

    • Rebecca, I will be happy to share! I feel like I’ll have more of an idea by next week, as my fatigue is worst in the week before my period. So if I’m not fatigued I will point my finger at the amino acids!
Ha! I’m with your husband. After a childhood of forced leftovers, I WILL NOT DO IT ANY LONGER.

  2. I’ll bet you know what I loved most about this- REX! Rex featured prominently in this post (as he should) and it really made my day.
Rex aside, I loved hearing about your Saturday. It seems so relaxing a peaceful- the perfect combination of activity, household chores, relaxation, and Rex. Oops, I said I was putting Rex aside, but I can’t.
So, baking soda in pasta sauce? I’ll have to try it, if I ever make sauce again. Nowadays I just use sauce from a jar. Also… you drink a LOT of water! I would be in the bathroom constantly. But, lots of water is good for you. That’s probably one of the reasons you feel so good.
I vote for another post, DITL Sunday!

    • I do drink a lot of water! Between 3-4 litres a day, depending on workouts, etc., and I definitely do need the bathroom a lot. I mean, I also drink like ten cups of coffee in the morning. I AM VERY HYDRATED JENNY. But I feel great most of the time, so I’ll just say it’s the water.
If you have any questions about the baking soda, hit me up! I add it to passata and then add in sundried tomatoes and honestly it’s really delicious.

  3. Thanks for the glimpse into your Saturday.

We pay extra for free-range eggs, too. We go through about 18 a week and Noah doesn’t even like them, so it’s just me and Beth.

I wouldn’t know what to eat for lunch if it wasn’t for leftovers. On the rare occasion we don’t have any, I am always puzzled come lunchtime.

    • Steph, I imagine eggs are such a great protein source for you! I was amazed at how many more we went through when M was here for only a week. I was like WHAT HAPPENED WHERE ARE THE EGGS. It’s such a nice service, they deliver the eggs and they are fresh from the farm, and the cost is on par with the grocery store.

  4. I LOVED seeing a day in your life, Nicole! It’s always fun to get a peek into someone’s full day. The thing that blew my mind most was the baking soda trick – why haven’t I ever heard of this? Me, with such a sensitivity to acid – why hasn’t anyone ever mentioned this trick to me? I’m going to make pizza today and give it a try. I love leftovers! I will have leftover pizza for days and I’m looking forward to it!
How lucky you are to have a good doggy friend to hold your hand during yoga.

    • Michelle, I wonder if it would help you! My husband used to get heartburn whenever I’d make pasta with tomato sauce, but I tried that trick and now he doesn’t. Pretty sure that’s not a coincidence. I add a teaspoon or so to two bottles of passata, and as it heats up everything bubbles up like crazy. Then I add the sundried tomatoes, etc., and it bubbles a bit more, after it simmers down it’s perfect.
Isn’t Rex the cutest, just hanging out, holding hands.

  5. I’m a no-leftovers girl myself—if you can believe it, they actually give me migraines! I think it’s something that builds up in the food over time. Probably not great for any of us, really.

I love hearing about your routine. You’re so inspiring. Honestly, I love hearing everyone’s routines—I like to take a little from each person and make it part of my own life. It makes me feel like we’re all doing life together. 💜

  6. I love this peek into your Saturday. I really must drink more water! I too like a bit of routine in my day and, although retired, like to differentiate weekends from weekdays, even though people inevitably say ‘oh every day is a weekend for you now’. No, it’s not.

  7. Loved this, Nicole! Such a fun post. I love how enthusiastic you are about all the different aspects of your day. It just radiates joy and energy!

Guess what, I’ve been using the baking soda trick for years. It works!!

  8. Lots of fun. You and Rex look like a happy duo. I like that you drink a lot of water, too— but sometimes feel like people think I’m nuts. I mean, I may be, but the water consumption isn’t part of my nuttiness.

  9. Placebo effects are nothing to sneeze at! But they do make recommendations trickier…

Thank you for writing this up, and also uuuugh to that editor’s headline. Yes, it’s attention-getting but attention-getting isn’t actually *healthy* at least some percentage of the time…

I am also curious about the Churchill joke. (my two favorite Churchill stories about his electric toothbrush and the intersection of Soap And Red Tape, personally)(I would not have favorite Churchill stories but I got to work on his archive, so now I have favorite Churchill stories…)

    • Hahaha that’s the thing – is the BCAA working, or am I just having the placebo effect? Who can say! I will be able to tell for sure by next week as my fatigue usually is quite bad the week before my period. I will let you know! Lol, trust me to give everyone the details of my cycle!
The Churchill joke is along the lines of “Gentlemen, we have come to understand that there is one definitive way to understand the mind of a woman. If only we knew what it was.” Mmm. Hmmm.

  10. I love everything about this post! So many dishes, Nicole!

Two questions: Do you have to, like, FORCE yourself to drink the two glasses of water in the morning? I have tried and tried for YEARS to drink water first thing after waking, and it always feels awful. Maybe I am just really not thirsty in the morning, but I wonder if it’s easier for other people.

Also, the legs up the wall! Tell me more about how often and how long. This is again something I tried to do for a long while, but haven’t in a good two years because we have hard flooring in this house.

Love all the photos of Rex and all the descriptions of food. The Churchill quote guy, though, I might be able to live without. I can’t tell if he is charming or irritating.

    • To answer your question about “Grandpa,” I think he’s lonely. So I don’t mind, the Churchill joke usually takes less than a minute to relate.
Regarding water, I have been doing this so long that I can’t remember not doing it. I just really like water, I guess? It feels awful to me not to immediately drink water, maybe I dehydrate during the night, who can say.
Legs up the wall! It’s so relaxing and good for the circulation/ varicose veins. I do this a couple of times a week, and I use my yoga mat because otherwise the floors ARE too hard. As for how long, usually about ten minutes or so. I generally combine it with other restorative poses.

  11. Gah – 3:55! I would need to go to bed at 7pm to get up that early and not be a zombie!! Although “sleeping in” until 6 am must feel pretty luxurious on the weekend!

I loved the peek into your day as well. Our weekends are quite different from our week days, too, but our weekends have a predictable rhythm which the boys have now picked up on. So they like to ask “where are we going today?” on weekend mornings even though there are always some consistent rocks in the schedule, like going to the library, unless we have something going on.

  12. I love having these peaks into other people’s lives. You are such a morning person. Rex is so cute, I loved seeing him throughout your day. Have you posted any photos from your garden this year? I would love to see an update. Also is that Devotions by Mary Oliver, I try to read a poem from that in the morning when I’m home and I remember.

  13. It sounds like a perfectly lovely day. I don’t think your husband know the rule “the last person out of bed, makes the bed!”. I am always up first so I made that rule lol. I have several of the same skin care/makeup products so I think you have influenced me. One of the things I like about these posts is peering at the things in the background of the pics…especially kitchens. I have been doing legs up the wall for a back injury & it feels so good. I’m glad you had wine; you always talk about your red wine Fridays and I thought you only drank on Fridays. We aim for weekends only but that’s Friday, Saturday & Sunday! I chucked at you getting ready for bed at what, 6:30? Now that said I got home from golf today at 2:00; it was a chilly day so I showered and thought about putting on my cozy robe but I resisted.

    • Ha! My husband does a lot around the house but I have come to accept that he’s just not going to make the bed, complete with pillow shams and decorative pillows. So I do it, and I don’t mind because a) it takes less than 60 seconds, and b) it is the quickest way to make the room look beautiful! I always have wine on Fridays and often Saturdays as well – it’s the weekend!

  14. I love all of this, but my favorite bits were when Rex tried to hold your hand during yoga and… Nicole!! your makeup-free skin is gorgeous!!!
